We live in a community defined by its compassion, generosity, and commitment to uplifting one another. Over the past three years, Be The Change Inc. has been driven by a mission to end hunger in Hardin County, building Blessings Boxes, delivering meals, and serving hundreds of individuals, especially on major holidays. But now, we find ourselves at the crossroads of an even greater need—one that has become evident through the heartfelt conversations with our elderly neighbors and those who feel isolated, lonely, and forgotten.
Recently, I had a conversation with an elderly gentleman named David, who expressed his deep concern about the isolation felt by many of his peers. He shared that many older adults feel disconnected from the community, struggle with suicidal tendencies, or fall into depression and alcoholism. His words resonated deeply with me and inspired me to envision a place where all generations could come together, share experiences, and build connections—a place where no one feels alone.
This is why we are launching an initiative to create the Hardin County Social Center, a safe and welcoming space where the elderly can gather, socialize, and engage in meaningful activities alongside children and adults of all ages. The Center will offer various programs, from recreational activities for children to support groups, classes, and social events for seniors.
According to the U.S. Census data, Hardin County is home to a growing elderly population, many of whom live alone or face significant barriers to social engagement. Research shows that social isolation and loneliness among older adults are linked to severe health risks, including an increased risk of premature death, dementia, heart disease, stroke, depression, and anxiety.
Psychological and sociological theories support these findings, suggesting that social connection is essential for mental and emotional well-being. The Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, for example, posits that older adults prioritize meaningful relationships as they age but often face challenges in accessing these opportunities. Meanwhile, the Theory of Gerotranscendence highlights the need for older adults to find a sense of purpose and meaning in their later years, something that social engagement can foster.
Creating a recreation center that bridges generations and offers a safe space for everyone is not just a charitable endeavor—it is a vital necessity for our community's health and well-being. Such a center can significantly reduce the risks associated with isolation, provide meaningful engagement for our children, and foster a more connected, inclusive Hardin County.
However, we cannot do this alone. The support from our community is essential. We have already received an incredible commitment from a local car dealership, pledging monthly donations for an entire year to make this vision a reality. But to truly sustain and grow this center, we need contributions from all sectors—citizens, businesses, and local organizations.
Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and their success is intertwined with the community's well-being. By supporting the Hardin County Social Center, businesses are investing in a healthier, more vibrant community where all residents, including their customers and employees, can thrive. Contributing to this cause demonstrates a commitment to corporate social responsibility, enhances brand loyalty, and fosters goodwill among potential customers. It's a win-win situation: when the community prospers, businesses prosper.
We urge every member of our community—individuals, families, businesses, and local organizations—to join us in making the Hardin County Social Center a reality. Your contributions, whether financial, in-kind, or volunteer hours, will make a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most. Together, we can create a place where everyone feels valued, connected, and supported—a place that truly embodies the spirit of Hardin County.
Let us be the change our community needs. Let us come together to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
With gratitude and hope,
